Originally settled by the Romans along Stane Street, the town thrived during the Middle Ages with many of the buildings from that period surviving today. The town's name has stayed relatively the same since the Domesday Book records, with the only variation from today's name being 'Dunemowe' and 'Dommawe' during the previous Saxon period.
